Why Portland Has The BEST Food Scene in America!

by Aaron Cullen

Everyone loves to hate on Portland but, the truth is, our city keeps topping the nation’s “best of” lists when it comes to food. Food & Wine even named Portland the 5th best city in the country for food and wine, and once you dive into the local scene, it’s easy to see why.

When Briana and I moved to Portland six years ago, we knew we were stepping into a city with creativity at its core. Portland isn’t just artistic in the galleries or music venues, it’s a place where craftsmanship shows up on every plate and in every cup. Food here isn’t just food; it’s an art form, and it’s one of the many reasons people fall in love with living in Portland.

Take Ken’s Artisan Bakery, for example. Ken Forkish, a former Silicon Valley tech worker, traded the corporate grind for flour, yeast, and creativity. He trained with master chefs before planting his roots here in Portland. Now, Ken’s bread and pizzas have been named some of the best in the entire country. That kind of passion and artistry is what defines Portland’s food culture—and why so many people are proud to call this city home.

And it doesn’t stop there. Our food cart scene is unlike anywhere else. With over 600 food carts across the city, you’ll find cuisines from every corner of the world, often crafted by chefs pouring their hearts into small kitchens on wheels. It’s casual, affordable, and delicious—and it’s very Portland. Whether you’re new to the city or exploring Portland neighborhoods for the first time, grabbing a bite at a food cart pod is a must.

Of course, we can’t forget our proximity to the Willamette Valley Wine Country. With over 700 wineries nearby, Portland gets to enjoy world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay just a short drive from downtown. That farm-to-table freshness makes its way into local restaurants and tasting rooms, blending food and wine into something unforgettable. For those moving to Portland, Wine Country adds another layer to the lifestyle that makes this region so unique.

And if wine isn’t your thing, maybe craft beer or coffee is. With over 80 breweries and some of the best coffee roasters in the nation (hello, Stumptown and Heart Coffee), Portland is a city where passion for flavor is always brewing. From cozy coffee shops perfect for rainy mornings to casual breweries with the best local IPAs, this is part of the lifestyle that makes Portland such a vibrant place to live.

This is the Portland we know and love, a city that thrives on creativity, craftsmanship, and supporting local businesses. It’s why we’ve built a life here, and it’s one of the many reasons I love helping clients find Portland homes that fit their lifestyle.
